Medium/Natural Coats - Wire Coats

A lot of people ask, what tools do I need for this breed, but really you should be looking into what kind of coat type you have. We’ll produce a small example list of breeds, and if you have a mix, you’ll really want to look into the breeds it resembles the most to find the right coat needs for your dog.

Medium/Natural Coats - Focusing the Wire Coats

There are technically two types of what our salon labels as Medium Coats and is the largest group of coat types between the 3 coat labels we have in the salon, including most of our cat clients. Medium coats need a mixture of coat oils and emollients to keep the very large group of coats in a healthy state of being. Today, I’m going to focus on one half of the group, the wire coats. This is the coat type I deal with the most, so naturally it just made sense to share the home care for the wire coat. Check out this list of breeds:

Airedale, Schnauzer, Scottish, West Highland White, Cairn, Norfolk, Norwich, PBGV, Russell (broken variety), Border, Irish Terriers, etc.

The first questions everyone always asks me, can I bathe at home. Yes, yes you can. However, we really need to make sure we are replacing the good oils these coats need once we shampoo out all the dirt, grime, and oils the body has made from the last bath. Having a quality conditioner to follow up after the shampoo is going to be key for these guys. Of course, be sure to rinse all the product out, other wise you’ll be inviting bacteria and other health hazards to start living on the skin. Mixing your shampoo in a mixing bottle, a frother, or a spray bottle will help make sure you don’t have large quantities of product left in the coat. Below are a list of bathing tools we use that you can also use at home.

Bathing is not the only thing you can be doing at home to maintain your wire coat. The goal is take care of two coat types, the soft coat that sits closer to the skin and the harsh coat you feel on most wire coats. Pulling out the under soft coat will help the skin breath and exfoliate. I’m sure I’ve mentioned some tools in the youtube videos you’ve watched, or when you’ve picked up your dog at the salon. So here are a few must haves to have at home to help keep the four-leggers at home in a healthy coat you could win best in show with.

Metal Comb - If this cant get through the coat, there is a mat there

a rake to help pull out fuzzy coat making your groom last longer

long pin brush to help work out mats

a dremel to do the nails between appointments helps keep arthritis at bay

These are just the basic essentials to have at home for your wire coat. If you would like to venture into more grooming at home, be sure to stop by the Youtube channel to see our how to videos.
